Gay Pride 05 - my speech

  • Jul. 3rd, 2005 at 4:40 PM
It is, I accept, not all things to all people. But as a speech to give at a rally of 15,000ish people of unknown bisexual content or familiarity with bi issues or the existence of bisexuality, I think it works. It had to come in at two minutes because there was a lot of speakers.

To me Pride is a day to acknowledge the things that bring us together, the things that we have in common. To celebrate our appreciation for the same sex, and fight both the hostility we face from some corners of society and our second class status in law.

We're fighting to give same-sex relationships the respect granted to opposite-sex relationships.

But for bisexuals that fight goes both ways.

According to some, if I'm holding hands with my girlfriend I'm hiding. If I'm holding hands with my boyfriend I'm rebelling.

I want holding hands to be holding hands.
I want to be able to celebrate all my sexuality equally.
I want to be able to say I am bisexual and not have to 'admit' I am bisexual.

What brings the gay community together? Looking out at you I can see people of all shapes and sizes, all colours and backgrounds. We are diverse! All that brings us together is in the title. Lesbian, Gay, Transgender, Bisexual. United in common struggle and common celebration.

It doesn't matter that there's a bisexual behind the bar in the gay pub, or running the gay charity, or writing for the gay newspaper or even on stage at Gay Pride.

Because we've been doing all of those things all along. But we don't want saying we're bisexual to be admitting we're bisexual.

Thank you! Have a great day, see you at the bi stall!
Or at least, that's what was on my piece of paper. I think I stuck fairly close to it but it was a little blurry due to the terror.

The terror had been eased by having had a nice chat with Christine Burns (the speaker preceding me) who is fab. We proceeded to wince and roll out eyes at each other during the interfaith blessing. And by a friend of [info]mandrake91 who'd been on singing and came up and chatted to me. I also managed to catch David Bedella's eye just before he went on and tell him how much I'd loved him as Hedwig. He has the cutest ear-to-ear grin full of sharp white teeth. (c:

All in all it was a great day - it was marvellous to see so many people take flyers in the afternoon, and I even got some cheered yeahs at my holding hands line.

Many thanks to [info]djm4 for organising our presence, to [info]valkyriekaren and [info]cookwitch for the fabulso banner and to everyone else who was there or texted me good luck messages.

Anyone got any pictures online?

Oh, and I shaved my head and shaved my moustache and beard off.

You were great. If you were terrified, it didn't show. You seemed as relaxed, confident and approachable as if you were telling an anecdote in the pub. I'm very proud to know you!

Perhaps I'm always in a pub in my head. (c:

So proud I could pop, congratulations on many a good word said.

So sorry I missed it, I was truly gutted yesterday when I head about it from David.

Should be at the Eastman Monday morning at the least.

It was a top speech. What you have there matches with my recollection as far as I can remember. You certainly didn't look like someone with The Fear!

Thanks for doing this speech - hoorah for visibility!

And it was good having dinner with you and katyha.

Thanks!

It was good, wasn't it. Must remember the place. Or indeed what I did with the card I took so that I'd remember the place...

It was definitely called Carthage, and was definitely towards Covent Garden. A bit of machine assistance yields: Carthage, 9a King Street, WC2E 8HN, tel 020 7240 0064.

Shame I missed it, from the sound of things it was a proper Pride march rather than a prelude to an overpriced festival. Hope they hold another one like it next year.

It really was like old Pride. We marched to the rally. People hung out behind the bi stall. I'm actively looking forward to next year's. (c:

I agree with the others, you didn't look in any way terrified, you looked very relaxed and comfortable.

I am so proud of you. I love you. Your being involved in the rally prompted me to pay it some attention this year - last year I ducked out of the march early due to feeling completely knackered, and then avoided the crowds thereafter. I learned some new things yesterday, that I'm glad I didn't miss.

We shall be there again next year!

That was very well put, and you came across just fine.

I thought you were fabulous - although I think it was a crying shame that you did not sing, recite uplifting poetry or exhort us to express our spiritual natures in an open and empowering way... ;o) Next time please do not forget to include these vital ingredients.

The terror was entirely invisible from where I was standing. Well done!

Congrats adjectivemarcus
Wow, well done. I don't think I could ever
do a speech in front of soooooo many people.

I wasn't on the Gay Pride march myself this
year, just heard about it on lj.

Congrats on speaking up for us Bi's :)

[info]calum mentioned you in a thread in his LJ, so I came over to have a look and found this. I like the distinction between "saying" and "admitting".

Thanks! It's a distinction I feel isn't made clear to some.

If you're involved with icb9 then you might find this post interseting too: http://www.livejournal.com/users/adjectivemarcus/325546.html as it was partly inspired by the catalogue of disasters that was icb8... (c;
